5 Hidden Fees Your
Provider Charges.
Most UK merchants are paying 15-30% more than they need to. These are the fees providers bury in the fine print.
The PCI Compliance "Admin" Fee
Providers charge £5-£25/month for PCI DSS compliance, framed as a service. In reality, maintaining compliance is their legal obligation — you should not be paying extra for it. Teya includes PCI compliance at no additional charge.
The Non-Compliance Penalty
If you miss a PCI questionnaire (even by accident), providers charge a "non-compliance fee" of £30-£60/month — on top of the compliance fee. Many merchants pay this for months without realising. Check your statements carefully.
The Minimum Monthly Service Charge
Buried in the small print: if your processing fees fall below a minimum threshold (usually £25-£35), they charge you the difference. Quiet months hit hardest. This disproportionately affects seasonal businesses and new merchants.
Auth and Transaction Fees
Beyond the headline processing rate, most providers charge 1-3p per transaction in authorisation fees. On 1,000 transactions a month, that is £10-£30 extra — never mentioned in the initial pitch. Always ask for the full fee schedule.
The Terminal Rental Trap
Monthly terminal rental fees of £15-£25 per device sound reasonable until you realise a £20/month terminal costs £240/year — roughly the purchase price. Providers profit most on long-term renters. Buying outright often makes more sense for stable businesses.
