The UK's contactless payment limit has evolved significantly over the past decade. Here is the current state of play and what it means for merchants.
The UK's contactless payment limit has evolved significantly over the past decade. From the initial introduction at just a few pounds per transaction to the current position, the journey reflects broader consumer confidence in tap-to-pay technology.
The standard contactless limit in the UK remains at 100 pounds, raised from 45 pounds in October 2021. Mobile wallet payments via Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay have no upper transaction limit, as these are authenticated through biometrics (fingerprint or face recognition) rather than relying on the card's contactless chip alone.
For merchants, the distinction between physical contactless and mobile wallet transactions is important. Physical card contactless transactions are subject to cumulative limits that may require a PIN entry after a set number of consecutive taps or total spend threshold. Mobile wallet payments do not have this restriction.
Merchants should ensure their terminals accept both physical contactless and mobile wallet payments. The speed of contactless transactions reduces queue times and improves customer experience, which is particularly valuable for high-footfall businesses in hospitality and retail.
The trajectory is clear: contactless adoption continues to rise, with over 90% of eligible card transactions in the UK now made via contactless. Merchants who embrace this trend position themselves well for the increasingly cashless economy.
